Blog - Creating Silver Lantern Tea

Welcome to my blog

My name’s Rebecca and I’m the person responsible for the creation of Silver Lantern.  Although creation probably isn’t quite the right word, given that it is still very much a work in progress. The purpose of this blog is to share with you my experiences of setting up a business from scratch.  I will try to be as honest as I can about any successes and failures that I have along the way.  I have no idea whether this story has a happy ending, but what I do know is that I feel passionately about Silver Lantern and whatever the outcome, I won’t have any regrets in having tried to start a business – better to have tried and failed, and all that....

Well, an amazing year for Silver Lantern Tea at the Great Taste Awards. Here's the official blurb on the awards for those of you that haven't heard about them...

"Judged by over 400 of the most demanding palates belonging to food critics, chefs, cooks, members of the Women’s Institute, farmers and a host of food writers and journalists, Great Taste is widely acknowledged as the most respected food accreditation scheme for artisan and speciality food producers. When a product wears a Great Taste label it carries a badge of honour but more importantly, the Great Taste logo is a signpost to a wonderful tasting product – and hundreds of judges have worked hard to discover the very best through hours and hours of blind-tasting a total of 10,000 different foods and drink."

I'm in a pleasant state of disbelief at how many awards we won. 8 in total - yes.... 8!!!!!

The most exciting award is the 3 Gold Stars that Lapsang Souchong received. Very few products receive 3 stars so I'm chuffed to bits. The judges said this about it:

"Clean smokey taste. Creamy wood. Well balanced with some sweetness at the finish. Well constructed."

In addition, Silver Lantern was awarded the following:

Jasmine Peals - 2 Stars

Oolong - 2 Stars

Vanilla Rooibos - 2 Stars

Darjeeling - 1 star

Jasmine Yin Hao Lotus - 1 Star

Yunnan Green - 1 Star

Yerba Mate - 1 Star

I'm particularly pleased that the Oolong and Jasmine Pearls won 2 stars as they're two of my personal favs in the range.

Here's the full list of Great Taste winners. Well done to everyone who got some stars.

And so its back to work I go.

I've made good progress with Silver Lantern over the year, however to be honest with you I did hope for more. I think I underestimated how much time looking after a baby takes.

My lovely sister in law, Emma, has now joined Silver Lantern Tea to help me get everything done. I'm so happy (and lucky) to have her on board . Emma is helping with the ever increasing amount of orders from Not On The High The business does appear to be growing at a nice rate.

There's some exciting things coming up over the next few months. I've entered various teas into the Great Taste Awards for the second year running. If Silver Lantern Tea is half as successful as last year, I'll be really pleased.

Emma has also come up with a really quirky, interesting xmas tea product, so we're both working on developing that in time for Xmas 2014.

Interesting times ahead.

OMG - Xmas is mad! I have so many orders for my monthly tea subscription from Not On The High that I'm crazily busy. The living room is piled high with boxes and there's tea everywhere. I've had barely any sleep the last few nights, and my hands are sore. Thankfully Will is helping me, and Bethany is having nice long naps which allows me to get stuff done.

Although I barely have time for a cup of tea, Silver Lantern Tea is now starting to feel like a's a nice feeling.

Best get back to it - Merry Xmas everyone!
